Why British Whites?
Donna Schilling and Janet Kendall were breeders of Paint Cow Horses and needed a few calves to track around the arena. “We ended up with a group of black calves from the sale barn but couldn’t resist this one white heifer just because she was so cute!” The white heifer with black ears, nose and speckles throughout quickly became a ranch favorite and ended up with the name of Rosie. As Rosie aged she fit right into the herd of Angus and Brangus cows and seemed to handle the stress of ever changing Texas weather better than the others. Her body condition stayed good throughout the year, she calved easily and bred back quickly. Her calves consistently showed 100 lbs. more gain at weaning than the rest of the herd. Rosie was also easy to handle and seemed to know what was expected of her without much fuss.
Breed Characteristics
Bloodlines
British Whites originated in 1765, with direct links to the ancient indigenous wild white cattle of Great Britain. British White males make an extremely good mating on almost all domestic breeds, and the British White association supports a Grading Up program for new breeders (details here.)
Temperament
British Whites are easy to handle, and have a docile temperament-- Perfect for the hobby farmer or family project. They also demonstrate outstanding mothering instincts and habits.
Conformation & Health
Hearty individuals with wide, strong frames; Extremely correct foot and set to the hock; Well attached udders; Naturally polled. British Whites also consistently stay sound and healthy, with excellent hardiness and milking abilities.
These are all practical, money making traits that will improve your herd, but the British White also brings fancy eye appeal with its wildly unique color patterns. If showing is in your wheelhouse look no further than these painted up steers and heifers for the market classes; Just imagine the attention you will get in the show ring and from your neighbors when they see them in the pasture!
